The goal of the NAMI Family and Peer Panel is to improve crisis response through sharing of lived experiences and education on NAMI services. Family and peer presenters recount lived experiences of interactions with law enforcement during mental health crises, offer tips for positive interactions, explain barriers to treatment and answer questions from the participants. The NAMI Family Navigator provides a brief overview of NAMI education, support and resource referral services that can be helpful to share with families during crisis response.

Learning objectives:

  • Provide overview of NAMI education, support and navigation services that can be shared with family members during a crisis response
  • Acknowledge barriers peer and/or family member faced in accessing treatment, help and services
  • Offer tips on helpful ways to interact with peers and family members during a crisis response
  • Create opportunity to increase empathy, connection and the value of collaboration in crisis response
